BWR = Brothers Water Round
Brothers Water is a small area of water just south of Patterdale. This is the second cache in the Brothers Water Round. From the first cache BWR1: Low Wood continue on the path and just after Hartsop Hall take the track on the right that will lead to the old mine.
The first lease for mining in this area was granted in 1696. Mining was sporadic until 1864 when the Hartsop Hall Mine Company was established and new levels were cut, a mill was built, and a leat dug. The mine was closed in 1871 because of persistent allegations of pollution of Brothers Water. It turned out that these allegations were unfounded but the mine did not re-open until 1931. It finally closed in 1947. The vein runs NE-SW in Borrowdale volcanic ashes and the main minerals extracted were lead and barites. The mine also produced silver, blende, straw-coloured fluorspar, wulfenite, copper and a small amount of gold.
If you want to learn more about the mine then read Greenside and The Mines of the Ullswater Valley by Ian Tyler.
After finding the cache retrace your steps back to Hartsop Hall and then on to the next cache in the round.
