Geocache Description:

Situated just south of Eaglehawk Neck you’ll find this interesting little piece of Tasmania.

A brief outline of how this one The Blowhole was created;

The cliff line here was originally an unbroken line of siltstone. The rock in which the Blowhole occurs are Permian in age and were deposited as silt and sand on the floor of a shallow sea. This was compacted under the load of later sediment. Vertical joints were created through earth movement which cracked the rock. Over the many thousands of years to follow the constant action of the sea eventually allowed erosion to cut caves and tunnels into the cliffs. The Blowhole was a former sea cave and tunnel.
This unique Blowhole formed when the roof at the rear of this particular tunnel collapsed, creating a broad arch. Swells enter the tunnel and sea-spray and air are blasted through the funnel, creating an explosive effect in the small joints at the back of the inlet.

If you can time your visit for an incoming tide or rough seas you may well see the Blowhole live up to its name.

To log this cache you will need to perform the following requirements;
A) Answer the following two questions;

Q1. How many years ago was mud and silt deposited on the sea floor?

Q2. At the information sign describing the Blowhole, what does the Warning at the bottom of point 3 say?

B) Take a picture of your clearly visible GPSr in front of the ‘Blowhole’. You get bonus points if you can get the water blowing up at the same time.

C) Take a photo of one of the Doo signs (the sign only, you do not have to be in the photo) that you would have passed on your way into this spot. If you arrived by water vessel it’s only a short walk north along Blowhole Road to find a sign. All photos should be uploaded with your logs.

Once you’ve completed the cache please submit your answers via Email using the Email function of the gc.com profile page then go ahead and log your find. We will at some stage view your answers, if there are any concerns we will contact you. We won’t be replying to correct answers.

There are a couple of other similar features nearby that have taken thousands of years to form, that are also well worth investigating.

Hope you enjoy this area as much as we did.
