Geocache Description:

An oasis of wooden beauty in these concrete times.

Suan Pakkad Palace or Suan Pakkard Palace, is now a museum in Bangkok. It is located on Sri Ayutthaya Road south of the Victory Monument. The museum has Thai antiques on display, including Ban Chiang pottery over 4,000 years old.

I first went to this compound a ways back as a young boy, when it was the home of Princess Chumbhot of Nagara Svarga, she was like a grandmother to me. The compound was a place of wonder with amazing cooks who were trying always to fatten me up. Pelicans which Princess Chumbhot insisted would never bite me but did bite the security for the Canadian PM who was visiting because, "they are ordinary people", as she said.

The museum opened in 1952 and features a group of four traditional Thai houses with covered hallways between them.

The name Suan Pakkad translates as "Cabbage Patch", but the museum's collection of five traditional pavilions is one of the best examples of traditional domestic architecture in the city. The Lacquer Pavilion is the most striking building, and is over 450 years old.

Suan Pakkad Palace is open everyday, except Sunday and national holidays, from 9.00 a.m. to
4.00 p.m. The cache is outside the peroperty.
