Have You Ever Driven Past Here And Wondered What This Is?
Well this is Stamfords modern sculpture by Wolfgang Buttress which celebrates one of the greatest love stories of the medieval age.
Edward 1 was married to Eleanor of Castile for 36 years. The Queen even went on the Crusades with her husband.
When Queen Eleanor died in 1290 at Harby nr Lincoln, King Edward 1 decided to honour her memory. He built a monument at the cross roads in each of the towns where the Queen’s body rested overnight on the way to her burial in Westminster Abbey.
There were originally 12 of them at Lincoln, Grantham, Stamford, Geddington, Hardingstone, Stony Stratford, Woburn, Dunstable, St Albans, Waltham, Cheapside and Charring Cross. Only three of the original crosses survive today (the most famous is Charing Cross in London). Here in Stamford all that is left is a small fragment of Purbeck Marble with a rose carved on it in the town's museum
Pupils of the Queen Eleanor Technology College have written haiku poems (17syllable phrases) about love and remembrance, appropriate for the Eleanor cross. Each word of each poem has been engraved in an individual bronze stud. Each poem is engraved in a different fount but the words are mixed up and fixed randomly in the paving and the seats around the cross

The coordinates do not take you to the cross but instead take you to a viewing platform at the bus station, if you want to view the Cross please go to the ramp as the small tree in front of the viewing platform is now a very tall one and it obscures the view!!!
**Parking charges may apply in some places, please check as the traffic warden is hot in Stamford**
***Please note that the bus station may be busy at times, so keep hold of little ones***
**Tweezers may be required.
