Another little memorial spot that I never knew about. In fact a farmer who lives nearby while i was looking for it, said he knew nothing about it when i inquired from him.
The road from Wasbank to Dundee, up and over Indumeni Mountain, follows the route of the Voortrekker Wenkommando (Victorious commando) on their way through this area to fight the battle against the Zulu’s on the banks of the Ncome river. As you reach the crest of this scenic pass you can look back down into the Wasbank valley and ahead into the Dundee and Glencoe valley. A memorial on the farm boundary on the crest of the pass (on the west side of the road), commemorates the Voortrekker struggle to haul their wagons to the top of the mountain. They called this the “Mud Mountains”, as a result of the large rocks and quantities of mud with they had to contend.
Park in the small farm road as you get to the top of the pass. You will need to cross over the road and scramble up the embankment to see the memorial. Please be careful as it is at the top of the rise and you will need to look for traffic. Although it is mostly mini buses and they don't get much speed up this pass....
The embankment is steep and the best is to go straight up at the sign facing Dundee coming from the Wasbank side of the pass.
The cache is near the memorial under some stones. The memorial is on private property just over the fence, but you need not enter the property to get the cache. Be aware of snakes and ticks as this is farm land with veld grass.... always check afterward for ticks...
