Welcome to Gulf State Park. This is the 1st in a series of “Gator Bait” caches that were designed around two things I felt our area lacked. First, I felt that we should have a series of caches that focused more on the aquatic resources, with a particular focus on sites that can be accessed only by kayak or canoe. Secondly, I wanted to create some caches that required a little extra effort to get to. These caches are not intended for the weak at heart.
The Gator Bait series is designed to take advantage of the beautiful lakes and marshes in Gulf State Park. The lakes include “Little Lake” which is spring feed and feeds via a canal to “Middle Lake”, which then feeds into “Lake Shelby”. Eventually, Lake Shelby flows into a marsh which meanders its way to “Little Lagoon” and eventually opens into the Gulf of Mexico at Callaway Pass.
“Gator Bait I” is located at “Gator Island” in Beautiful Lake Shelby. This is a 900+ acre lake which is listed as the closest fresh water lake to the Gulf of Mexico. Once you make it to the Island, you will need to do some minor bushwhacking to get to the cache. This journey will take you through a series of very sharp palmetto plants and an occasional briar. I donated a few drops of blood in the placing of this cache.
I hope you enjoy this series of caches and the journeys that you will take to get to them. It is my intention for these caches to be more about the journey than the arrival. For the marsh series (Yet to come) , you will likely want to keep a “track” of your journey so you can find your way out easily.
There is a small fee for access to the Lake Shelby picnic area unless you are a registered guest of Gulf State Park.
The cache is large enough for small travel bugs and trinkets. I have placed a decorative scroll-sawed cross at the cache for FTF. BYOP. Good hunting and don’t let the Gators Git ya!
I hope you have enjoyed all the geocaches we have placed in Gulf State Park, along with the rest of your experience here Please consider giving us some feedback here. We would appreciate it if you would include something about your geocaching experience. We hope to show the bosses in Montgomery how many people geocache, in hopes that they will encourage other Parks to invest in it like we have, here at Gulf State Park. Thanks, Dothenumbers.
