We’ve passed this pottery studio a hundred times while motoring along this high bluff stretch of Scenic Drive but, until recently, never thought to stop. Strange, because the studio purveyors have ‘assembled’ one of the more unique roadside - - let’s call it - - ‘sculptures’, presumably, for the purpose of luring itinerants such as ourselves to stop and ask the obvious questions: What is it? And why is it? Apparently, until now, we’ve lacked the requisite curiosity to make these inquiries. This cache is placed to commemorate the sculpture which, as far as we can determine, bears no relationship to pottery.
The Claybanks Pottery website tells us of the studio’s humble 1980 beginnings . . . a time when blankets on the ground were used for the display of their creations. Today, the blankets have been replaced by a pleasantly decorated, but not ostentatious, studio building set-back in the woods. “But for” the aforementioned roadside “sculpture”, one could easily miss this site.
The website also advises that the studio is open 7 days a week, year-round, and, most importantly, that the owners are “friendly” and invite passers-by to stop-in. In furtherance of this cache we had several very enjoyable visits with their staff. Take a few minutes and learn something about pottery as we did.
