There is an Eminence,--of these our hills
The last that parleys with the setting sun;
We can behold it from our orchard-seat;
And, when at evening we pursue out walk
Along the public way, this Peak, so high
Above us, and so distant in its height,
Is visible; and often seems to send
Its own deep quiet to restore our hearts
. The meteors make of it a favourite haunt:
The star of Jove, so beautiful and large
In the mid heavens, is never half so fair
As when he shines above it. 'Tis in truth
The loneliest place we have among the clouds.
And She who dwells with me, whom I have loved
With such communion, that no place on earth
Can ever be a solitude to me,
Hath to this lonely Summit given my Name.
William Wordsworth

The third in a circuit hike for those that don't necessarily wish to climb Lugnaquilla in the Garden County. The first illustration shows a hike of 6K directly from the parking area on the road by passing over Ballineddan and Slievmaan to this cache with a total ascent of about 500m. The star rating above is meant to reflect that hike but bear in mind that there is a stiff enough climb up to the first mountain.
This one is just as "easily" reached from the southern direction as indicated on the second map and via the Slieveboy cache and forest tracks. The final section from this side is on roughish terrain.
If you care to take in Lugnaquilla to Slieveboy by hiking clockwise from the northern car park then the hike would be considerably longer and the total ascent would rise to 850m, with a significant portion on roads. The second illustration shows a 20K circular hike that would take in all of them. There is a low boggy area between Slievemaan and Lug followed by a short sharp rise to Hezekiah's cache on the approaching side of Lug.
There are good mountain paths from the car park given both to Ballineddan and to Slievemaan. If you wish to carry on to Lybagh then you need to continue on the track (not too easy to discern due to the motorised brigade) at the summit of Slievemaan in the direction of Lugnaquilla which should loom pretty obviously in most conditions. Very shortly you will reach a split (N52 57.575 W006 28.900) in the track where the main one goes on down to a boggy saddle and then up to Lug but another goes off to the right in the direction of Lybagh. The path becomes less distinct at times but it does reach Lybagh. To continue further as far as Aghavannagh Mountain the terrain gets considerably rougher (peat hags) for a short time and it is difficult to follow tracks but they are there ok.
Do not start the trek without all the proper mountain rain gear, waterproof boots and the guidance material, compass, map, GPSr with mapping etc.

Please note that all parts of this cache are hiked at your own risk. The cache owner takes no responsibility of any sort for any reason including accidents or mishaps.

Please be aware that cars parked in areas close to walking trails are vulnerable and they can be vandalised or stolen. Unfortunately this is an ongoing problem which is extremely difficult to solve, so there is a risk involved. I have heard recently that many hiker groups are parking at the nearest population centres and getting taxis to and from the start points at very little expense.

Please observe the country code to the best of your ability. Local landowners often generously allow access to upland areas across or through parts of their private property. Please, please be conscious of this and return the courtesy by keeping all gates closed, immediately and not on your way back!. Please use the gates where appropriate but if you have to climb over them then use the hinged side ONLY.
Please do not cause any damage of any sort to fences or barriers along the way.
