Being alone is knowing
That in this solitary splendour
Solitude, stark and staring,
Solitude, singing a lullaby
Solitude, singing a dirge
Surrounded by so many sundry things;
Things seen and unseen
Factors known and unknown
Solitude singing softly, chanting without ranting
Solitude’s songs that sing of solemn things

Silence singing golden songs
Silence healing ancient wrongs
If only silence could be
More than a memory
More than history
Silence can be more than words
Empty words echoing in an empty world
Echoing in empty valleys
Silence unspoken, unspoken, unbroken
Transfixed by time.
(Rani Turton)

This time a longish walk to add to the list of treks in the Garden County.
It can be done on its own easily enough by hiking most of the way on forest tracks from the car park close to St Kevin's Church in Laragh or as part of a mountain hike which may take in several hillwalking caches including the one on Tonelagee.
If you choose the shorter version just as far as Mall Hill from Laragh and back the total length is about 12K and you will have ascended a total of 450m. I have used the star rating for difficulty and terrain to reflect this shorter hike only. For this route simply follow the forest track from the car park to N53 00.915 W006 18.235 where you will come to a meeting of tracks. You will be on the Wicklow Way at this point but you need to turn right at this point away from the WW.
Continue forward and rising on this track, staying left and upward, in the direction of N53 01.945 W006 19.715. Here you also stay left and continue till you reach a stream at N53 02.495 W006 20.415. You will exit the forest to open moorland here and it is a short distance to the cache. The alternative bigger circuit offered in the illustration above covers some 20K with a total ascent of 920m. It is truly one of the beautiful hikes of Wicklow with stunning views at many points and, as you can see, plenty of caches to be found along the way!
NB The cache along the forest track on the way from Laragh to Mall Hill is dependent on finding stages on a previous occasion.

Do not start the trek without all the proper mountain rain gear, waterproof boots and the guidance material, compass, map, GPSr with mapping etc.

Please note that all parts of this cache are hiked at your own risk. The cache owner takes no responsibility of any sort for any reason including accidents or mishaps.

Please be aware that cars parked in areas close to walking trails are vulnerable and they can be vandalised or stolen. Unfortunately this is an ongoing problem which is extremely difficult to solve, so there is a risk involved. I have heard recently that many hiker groups are parking at the nearest population centres and getting taxis to and from the start points at very little expense.

Please observe the country code to the best of your ability. Local landowners often generously allow access to upland areas across or through parts of their private property. Please, please be conscious of this and return the courtesy by keeping all gates closed, immediately and not on your way back!. Please use the gates where appropriate but if you have to climb over them then use the hinged side ONLY.
Please do not cause any damage of any sort to fences or barriers along the way.
