A series dedicated to looking at 1940's advertising. Each cache is a look back at how the media portraid common products, some good, some bad.

All of the locations will have something in common. Look for the signs.

Taken from old magazines from 1947 that I found at my grandpas house.

Manhattan Soap Company was a business founded in 1890 and located at 426 West 38th Street in New York City. It manufactured Sweetheart toilet soap and other products. 441 Lexington Avenue (Manhattan) was the company's physical address in 1937.

The firm purchased 100,000 square feet (9,300 m2) of water front property at the Degnon Terminal on Hunterspoint Avenue, in November 1916. The land ran from Dutch Kills, Queens Canal to Orton Street in Long Island City. The property, purchased from the Degnon Realty and Terminal Improvement Company, was to be used for the construction of a factory for the Manhattan Soap Company. An earlier plant was located at 52 Stone Street (Manhattan). In April 1937 Manhattan Soap Company agreed to stop using the word "doctor" in ads, because the term might have led consumers to believe the company's products were made with the advice of a physician. The business also confirmed with the Federal Trade Commission that it would not use false prices on cartons or boxes in which its soap was packed. It was packaged in neat little drawer style boxes and had a rather elegant filigree design embossed around the bar edges. The fragrance was a delightful rose floral and the creamy soap produced a lovely lather.

On Monday, November 27, 1944, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for SWEETHEART NOVIA by MANHATTAN SOAP COMPANY, INC. The USPTO has given the SWEETHEART NOVIA trademark serial number of 71476917. The current federal status of this trademark filing expired on 1/10/1986. The corporation was acquired by the Purex (laundry detergent) corporation on July 31, 1956. The trade mark is now held by the Dial corporation, but the bar soap is no long manufactured and is not available for sale.
