Geocache Description:

Trailhead for the Bonde Ranch Open Space, a Pleasanton jewel.

My wife tells me that the Bondes and Bonde Ranch were well known to 4-H members back in the 70's. I don't know if there's anything left of the ranch itself, but this section of Bernel Avenue and the developments along it now take up much of what once was. Fortunately, we can now enjoy this fabulous open space left over.

I've been associated with Pleasanton for many years and have lived not too far from here for 12 years now, but I had no idea this open space was here until I finally got around to attempting the excellent cache Lock Master that starts just up the hill from here. I highly recommend investigating it if you're going to be here.

There are a handful of official access points into this open space from these neighborhood streets that stick into the space on the south and west. Perhaps someday I'll plant another cache or two to flag some of the others. I usually park at this one. Another convenient gate is across the street from Mission Hills Park. I discovered one other entry point, apparently temporary and possibly illegal, from Roseima Place to the north, but I don't recommend it.

The cache you seek is near the Arlene Place entrance. Although technically classed as "small", it's small as small containers go. You'll need your own pen. There's a little room for trade. The cache is a micro, but with camo bigger than it is.

Once you've found the cache, I suggest you climb the hill and take in the amazing views of the valley to the north and south. I was astonished at how far you can see from here. More people should know about it.

3/13/2013: Finally changed the hint. It was originally, "This might be a short lived cache," reflecting the original hide which was on the ground in a little tuft of grass that I thought might get mowed at any time. Two years later, and the cache is still there, and the "tuft" has grown into a bush.

2/28/2021: The bush that grew up over the cache since the cache was placed 10 years ago was cut down, so the second hint -- "Under the bush" -- had to be changed again. Now there's a brand new tuft for it to be hidden under, although it's now mostly under the stump.
