Geocache Description:

Cache is hidden at Manpuku-ji Temple, way above a tiny pond (Suzuri no ike). Placement changed slightly on June 23, 2014 but coordinates are basically the same. After finding the pond, go up the stairs behind the pond and look for wild animals!

Manpuku-ji Temple is a 1-minute walk from Koshigoe station on the Enoshima Line.

This temple is related to MInamoto no Yoshitsune. In 1180, he came to meet his brother, Minamoto no Yoritomo, but he was refused. So Yoshitsune had to stay at this temple, writing a letter of appeal to Yoritomo's close friend, asking for a meeting. In the end, Yoshitsune returned to Kyoto without seeing his brother. Four years later, Yoshitsune was assassinated and his head was delivered to this temple. Suzuri-no-ike (Suzuri means inkstone and ike means pond) is where Yoshitsune's guard (Benkei) scooped water for Yoshitsune's inkstone. He used this inkstone when writing the letter of appeal.

The cache is hidden way above the pond. Wonderful view, wonderful animals, surprising Greek statuary!

元歴2年(1185)5月、源義経は平家の捕虜を同行し、源頼朝に面会するために、京から鎌倉へ向かったが源頼朝は義経を鎌倉に入る事を許さなかった。しかたなく、源義経は腰越の満福寺に逗留し、元歴2年(1185)5月24日、義経は一通の嘆願状（腰越状）を書き、源頼朝の信望の厚かった公文所別当・大江広元に差し出し申し開きをする。しかしそれも空しく、鎌倉の門は開かれなかった。義経はそのまま京へ帰り、奥州・藤原秀衡を頼って姿を消した。4年後、再び満福寺に戻った時には、義経は一個の首に成り果てていた。藤原氏4代目・泰衡の裏切りによって命を落としたのである。硯の池は、義経の依頼を受けた弁慶が腰越状を書くために水を汲んだとされる池です。
