Geocache Description:

A cache honoring 01-11-11, this grab & go is basic stuff, the name is a fun way of poking fun at out of towner's typical mis-pronouncing the town's name! Pronounced: Pen "Ar-gel', not 'Argiiyle' as in Socks!

With it's roots dating back to the 18th century, The borough of Pen Argyl had several names before the present name was established. During the 1870's the name was spelled Penargil. In 1882 the borough took it's present day name.
It was the presence of slate quarries here which attracted settlers from England. Early names were, Slateville, Delabole & Wind Gap Quarries. The Town received it's current identity in 1865 as Augustus Wolle inspired the name meaning: Pen- Welsh for 'Mountain" and Argilla Latin for 'Slate Rock'
