Cranberry Tri-River Rail-Trail is a 16.5 mile trail that begins in the city of Richwood, WV and follows the old Baltimore & Ohio rail line along the Cherry and Gauley rivers, and crossing the mouth of the Cranberry river. B & O was one of the oldest, and was the first 'common carrier' railroad in the United States. There is a lot of information on the net about B & O.
Much of this trail runs along the western edge of the Monongahela National Forest and, for now, terminates near the 640 foot "Saras Tunnel". The first six miles of the trail pass through town and adjacent to residents' yards. The recommended trail head is in Holcomb, WV. This series will show you some parts of the trail that you may otherwise decide to skip.
More information on the CTRRT may be found at The West Virginia Rails-to-Trails Council
Dain Park is a small but well maintained park adjacent to the CTRRT. The park is the site of the former Waterstone brothers ice plant. The plant began operations circa August 1929. It had a capacity of 120 blocks a day. The firm provided both wholesale and retail ice, making house-to house delivery's. The typical residential ice box held a one-foot-square block of ice that lasted about a week.
The Cache: You are looking for a magnetic key holder with logbook only. Bring your own pen.
Benchmark HX1270 is just across the trail from the cache. Geocaching ended benchmark support in January 23 and made it a Waymark category. If you would like more information on benchmarks, check out the National Geodetic Surveys FAQ page.
Bring your fishing pole & enjoy.
