HISTRORICAL BACKGROUND
The building was erected as a school building by Maj. HD Waren, British Resident and founder of Bloemfontein. It also served for a while as Dutch Reformed church. The young Rev. Andrew Murray was ordained in this hall by his father on 6 May 1849 as the first Dutch Reformed minister of Bloemfontein.
The hall was also used as a meeting place and Council Chamber. The Legislative Council of the Orange River Sovereignity met here from 1849-1854. The deliberations of the Bloemfontein Convention, through which the Free State obtained its indepndence from Britain in 1854, took place in this building. The Volksraad of the Orange Free State held its meetings from 1854-1856 in this hall and J.P.Hoffman(1854) and J.N. Boshof (1855) were inaugurated in this humble building as the first two State Presidents of the Orange Free State.
