Geocache Description:

Located at the Historic Fort York. This cache is a part of the series, “Around Toronto” (GC2MAV5), a mystery cache whose coordinates are found in 4 traditional caches located at famous Toronto sites. The required coordinate is located at the top of the logbook.

This cache is located at historic Fort York. This fort was built by the British, Canadian and First Nation Armies in the late 18th Century to defend the settlement of York from a military attack, principally from the newly independent United States. During the War of 1812, the U.S. army and naval forces attacked York from Lake Ontario, overrunning Fort York. As the British abandoned the fort, they set the gun powder to explode, which resulted in killing and wounding several hundred U.S. soldiers and destroying most of the fort. It is said that the blast was so loud it could be heard from Fort George all the way across the lake. The U.S. occupied York for 5 days, destroyed what was left of the fort and burned most of the settlement. They had defeated the outnumbered British, Canadian, and First Nations forces. As the war battled on and the U.S lost many more men, the British garrison returned to York and rebuilt the fortifications. The rebuilt fort was sufficient to repel a further attempted invasion in 1814 and still contains most of the building which are still standing today.

Be sure to be check the times of operation of Historic Fort York if you plan to take a tour or want to attend one of the special events.
