Geocache Description:

***This cache has temporarily been changed to a micro while I try to find a suitable small container that fits the GZ***
Whitecross Street is the location of one of the oldest street markets in London (off Old Street, EC1), and people have been selling there wares at the location since medieval times.

It was favoured by the more unsavoury sellers who weren’t allowed into the City, where all the street markets were regulated by guilds. It continued its strong trade through the 1980s, when there were as many as 140 stalls on the street. In more recent years the market hasn’t been quite as popular, around 45 in 2005.

Councillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability, said: "Markets like Whitecross Street are part of the fabric of our community and they are too good to lose. This is a great chance to reinvigorate the market for the future, while keeping its history and character alive. The design of the Whitecross Street improvements was led by consultations with local traders and residents -we all want the market to be a real success, restoring pride in the area and boosting the local economy."

The aim of the improvement project is to reverse the decline of this once-thriving market and boost the local economy. The project aims to revitalise the appearance of the street and attract people and inward investment to the area.

The Peabody Trust built apartments in multi-storey blocks, designed to offer clean, decent accommodation mostly in one- two- and three-roomed units. They had built just over 5,000 dwellings by 1887, including this block in the Whitecross Street area, one of a number of such buildings south of Old Street and north of the Barbican.

The cache is a small container with room for coins and TB's.
