van der Decken and I were exploring Gun Sight Hill when we came across this great viewpoint. We both agreed it deserved a cache and here it is!
Misty Valley View
We took the original BVPete route mentioned in his Gun Sight Hill cache GCZ95D to access the ridge as opposed to the White Buddha Trail access. It's still steep, but it's gained over a longer distance and we found it to be a nice off-trail hike. We came across this great viewpoint, that BVPete had told us about, on the way up the ridge near Sleepy_hollow's Exploring Gunsight Ridge cache GC46K56. Now I'm not usually one to drop an unplanned cache, but this spot certainly deserved one.
The cache is located about 1.8 km from parking at the closed gate by Elbow Falls on Hwy 66 in the winter and about 1.4 km from the Beaver Lodge parking by the Prairie Mtn TH in the summer. The total elevation gain is just over 200m. Follow the Elbow Valley trail that parallels the highway past the Prairie Creek trail until you reach the off-trail waypoint provided. Angle your way up off-trail trying to hit the saddle between the 2 high points at the additional waypoint provided. From there, go up to the rock outcrop and then easily ascend to the right side and hunt for the cache when up top.
Track Log to Summit
Please keep in mind that this is an off-trail hike and come prepared with the necessary equipment to handle potential difficult situations related to terrain, animals and weather.
