Flanesford View Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

lefthanded99: Due to changed personal circumstances I am not spending as much time is Ross as I used to. This cache has had a good run, but now is the time to archive it, I think.

Geocache Description:

Flanesford Priory was founded in the 14th Century by Sir Richard Talbot, who was at that time the owner of Goodrich Castle.

In the 1950s and 1960s, this was the only road connecting Monmouth to Ross-on-Wye and since we lived in Newport but had family living in Ross, we used to travel it frequently. In those days, the Priory was a gloomy, imposing building, and as children we were convinced that it must be haunted. I was always glad to be over Kerne Bridge and away from it.

There used to be a railway line running from Ross-on-Wye to Monmouth which closely followed the River Wye for most of the way, and the first station leaving Ross-on-Wye, excluding a halt at Walford, was at Kerne Bridge. The old railway station, which finally closed in 1959, can be seen next to the road bridge on the left bank of the river and, after many years as an outdoor activity centre, is now a private house.

The cache is a small screw-top container, slightly smaller than a 35mm. If you are driving, there is parking nearby so you should not need to cross any busy roads. (And if you are not driving, then you should already be aware of how busy this road is.)
