Viola Township at first named Washington, organized in May 1858, was renamed at the suggestion of Irwin N. Wetmore, for the village of Viola in Wisconsin, about 40 miles southeast of La Crosse. The railway village in section 21, bearing the same name, was platted in September 1878. It had a station of the Chicago and North Western Railway and two post offices; the first operated 1862-68 and 1875-80 before transferring to Corra, and the second, called Viola Centre, 1878-80, changed to Viola until 1963, when it became a rural branch. The Viola Gopher Count began in 1874 when the abundance of gophers was a problem and over the years has become an annual celebration.
