Heartland Cacher: Greetings I'm Heartland Cacher, one of the volunteer reviewers for new caches submitted to Geocaching.com.

I can't find any recent responses from the Cache Owner about maintaining this cache which makes it appear the Cache Owner is either unwilling or unable to maintain the cache. Cache maintenance includes listing maintenance including updating any changes to the text, updating coordinates, removing needs maintenance attributes and enabling the listing. The cache will be archived and removed from the active cache listings.

Geocache Description:

Please use caution as this is located along a very busy highway. Turn into the driveway at the county maintenance yard and drive east, close to the outside of its fence. It will take you within feet of the cache.

On Dec 10 1806, 27 year old Zebulon Pike and 15 men left from this very spot for a month long loop, probably down the Ute Trail, that took them on a torturous winter journey in hopes of finding the Red River. Quoting from Pikes journal "My poor fellows, now suffered extremely from the cold, being almost naked." Imagine how he must have felt to find himself back where he began and nothing to reward the terrible effort on Jan 5th 1807 when they stumbled onto the cabin they'd built, here, a month before. They had wondered around the South Park area clear to Salida, for nothing. He also recorded in his journal on Jan 5th" This is my 28th birthday, and most fervently did I hope never to pass another so miserably. I immediately recognized the Arkansas which we had left one month hence."
