Looming over Ucluelet harbour is the mighty Mount Ozzard! It is a
highly visible hill from Ucluelet, due in large part to the large
radar dome perched atop its peak.
Mount Ozzard was named after James William Ozzard, RN ( - 1902),
secretary to Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Maitland, Knt. (Commander in
chief of the Pacific Station, 1860-1862). Long before that, it was
(and still is) known as Chuumata in the Nuu-chah-nulth
language.
The hike to the top is not difficult, as it is up a rough access
road. However, unless you happen to have keys to the gate at the
bottom, you're looking at about a 5-km walk to the top.
Save this one for a clear day -- the views are spectacular.
