Yorkley is a large village situated 2.5 miles north of Lydney and just under 8 miles south of Cinderford. The village sits on top of a hill at 600ft above sea level, giving panoramic views of the Severn and the Cotswold Hills. To the North the village is bounded by forest and to the south by agricultural land. Yorkley is also where I grew up and lived in a house overlooking Captain's Green.
From the Rising Sun PH walk along the road (grass verge on both sides) towards the Yorkley to Parkend road. Beware this road can be busy in summer - do use the verges especially when walking with children. Soon the path leads straight on into the woods, where the road crosses over the old railway tunnel entrance. This part of the railway went from Lightmoor Colliery all the way down to Pillowell and Whitecroft where it met the branch line from Parkend to Lydney. The airshaft near the cache location was one of several that ventilated the old tunnel where it passed under the roads. The other large airshaft can be found beyond the Brick Pit on the far side of the Parkend road, where the tunnel eventually emerges and the railway went on down to Pillowell The cache is in a spot just off the main path & well out of the way of dog walking muggles. The cache has views of the airshaft but is no longer by it. It is a small clip lock box. Take care with children as the ground is uneven around the cache site. Parking is available at the following location should you wish to do a C&D - N51 46.285 W002 32.115. Thanks to the Forestry Commission for permission to place this cache.
