The New Dowse, Lower Hutt’s recently refurbished and re-launched art gallery, has a strong focus on the decorative arts and is a modern and funky place well worth a visit.

Completely revamped in 2006, The Dowse houses 11 exhibition spaces, several multi-purpose activity spaces, a courtyard and shop. The $6 million dollar redevelopment significantly expanded the building that originally opened in 1971. In September 2005, The Dowse closed its doors for a major building redevelopment. The re-launch of the new building in February 2007 saw the renaming of the gallery as TheNewDowse.

The New Dowse is also home to a great café where you can retreat for a coffee or brunch before more geocaching adventures.

The Lower Hutt City Council is set to start construction in February 2011 for the redevelopment of the ‘The Square’ in front of TheNewDowse. This enhanced outdoor space will be the beginning of an arts and culture based precinct in the city, hosting family-based and arts-related events that will complement TheNewDowse. The Square is intended to be completed by mid-2012, making it an even more interesting place to visit.
