Geocache Description:

This is a quick cache and dash at the Yarrow Stone. The container is a black cylindrical tube slightly longer than a film canister and contains a pen and a log. There is parking for a couple of cars at the start of the track but please don't block the track.

The Yarrow Stone is a well known early Christian monument which dates from the 6th centuary and is also known as the Liberalis Stone. It was set up to mark the grave of two British Christian chieftains. The position chosen for the burial was not a churchyard but a small cemetery, probably the family or tribal graveyard alongside a trackway.

It is an irregular slab of whinstone, about 1.5m high and was turned up by the plough at the beginning of the 19th century when this ground, then a moor known as Annan Street, was first brought under cultivation. It was found lying flat with the remains of human bones underneath it. At this time there were about twenty "large cairns" on the moor. After having been removed to Bowhill for examination, it was returned to Annan Street and was erected at the place of its original discovery.

The east face of the stone bears a Latin inscription, roughly executed and in parts badly worn so that little of the inscription can be made out. There are still disagreements to its correct translation however the text translates approximately as follows:
Here, an everlasting memorial. In this place,
here lie the most famous princes, Nudus and
Dumnogenus, in the tomb - two sons of Liberalis

After this cache why not continue the scenic drive by taking the passes to Ettrickbridge and Ashkirk picking up the Bottom Swire (GC2AXH7) and the Bishops Stone (GCM2G97) Caches on the way.
