La fondazione della città, che per questo è sicuramente una delle più antiche del Triveneto, si può fissare intorno al XI secolo a.C. ad opera dei Paleoveneti: L'insediamento all'epoca si chiama Opterg, che il lingua venetica significa "Piazza del mercato".
All'epoca la zona, leggermente in collina e posta tra il fiume Monticano ed un ramo non più esistente del Piave, era attraversata da importanti rotte commerciali, essendoci già degli stanziamenti fissi probabilmente da qualche secolo, dimostrati dai ritrovamenti di resti di necropoli.
L'importante posizione strategica della zona è stata la causa, per secoli, delle fortune e delle disgrazie della città. Scavi archeologici effettuati lungo tutto il XX secolo hanno portato alla luce parecchi reperti risalenti a quell'epoca, i più interessanti presso la cosiddetta "Mutera di Colfrancui".
State attenti a numerosi muggles nella zona ed al mimetismo, non fatevi vedere.

The foundation of the city, for this is surely one of the oldest of the Triveneto, it can be fixed around the eleventh century BC by the Paleoveneti: The settlement time is called Opterg, the Venetic language means "Market Square".
At the time the area slightly on the hill and placed between the river and Monticano a branch no longer exists the Piave, was crossed by important trade routes, as there already appropriations fixed probably for several centuries, proven by the discovery of the remains of the necropolis.
The important strategic position in the area was the cause, for centuries, the fortunes and misfortunes of the city. Archaeological excavations carried out throughout the twentieth century have unearthed several artifacts from that era, the most interesting at the so-called "will change to Colfrancui".
