SH20 High Point with extensive views to the east, south-east and west.
To get to this you must approach from the NE corner of the junction of SH20 and Hillsborough Rd. Suitable parking can be at the east end of Melrose Road East (S 36deg 55.095, E 174deg 45.461), or in the St Margaret's Church car park at 102 Hillsborough Rd if not otherwise in use (S 36deg 54.998, E 174deg 45.538). You will walk (or cycle) up grassy slopes to the top of a ridge that offers splendid views towards Mangere Mountain, Coromandels and Waitakeres. The cache owner's house is the nearest to the cache but over a couple of high fences. Another neighbour has a good view of the cache site and is very accommodating. Sometimes the grass can be long and a bit boggy in places in winter. This land is actually part of a railway reserve between Onehunga and Avondale that has been designated for nearly 70 years. We don't build railways quickly in Auckland! The land is administered by Transit, NZ Transport Agency. A deep cutting was made below this cache site when SH20 was extended from Hillsborough Road to Sandringham Rd. Construction start was September 2005 and completion May 2009. You will be on the Motorway side of a high fence, but well above and away from traffic. Explore the plantings and especially the drainage system. Transport Agency has chosen to leave this strip accessible to the public, but best not to venture down the hill to mingle with the traffic. Keep children close at hand. Best views at the top by the high fence, a bit away from the cache. Cache is a 35mm film canister. Please replace it carefully as you found it. Bring your own pen.
