Geocache Description:


Mole Street of Sunagawa

There is a "Y" intersection at Nishi-Sunagawa and Itukaichi-Kaidou coming from Tokyo. The Nishi-Sunagawa (on the right) is an old road and Itukaichi-Kaidou is new.

The old Nishi-Sunagawa road, has less traffic and is quiet.
In the past this road was narrow and lined with tall Zelkova trees which created a wonderful tunnel effect.
During the Summer the leaves of the Zelkovas wrapped the street so densely the street was always in the shade.
Because of this the Locals called it the "Mole Street of Sunagawa".

Nishi-Sunagawa-Kaidou is wider now and most of the Zelkova trees are gone but it's nickname has survived.
Please bring a pen. There is free parking lot in Rinsenji Temple.

「砂川のもぐら街道」
東京方面から五日市街道を下って来ると、西砂川の交差点でＹ字型に二股に分岐。
左が現在の五日市街道、右が旧五日市街道（西砂川街道）。
旧道がこの先横田基地で遮断され、現五日市街道が付け替えられたとの事。
旧道に入った途端に車の交通量が減り静かに。両側の背の高い欅並木も見事。
ケヤキの葉が道を覆い、緑のトンネルの様な雰囲気から「砂川のもぐら街道」と呼ばれたそうです。でも、今はそんな印象も残って居ませんね。

この街道には、殿ヶ谷新田の鎮守として創建された阿豆佐味天神社。
境内には明和元年（１７６４）の庚申塔や馬頭観音が建立。
その隣は、中里新田開発当初、享保1４年（1729）に創建された林泉寺。
