Geocache Description:

The Baakens Valley is a long and narrow green-space running through the heart of the Port Elizabeth metropolitan area. It stretches in a general east-west direction from just above the harbour to the western outskirts of Port Elizabeth.

Access to this area is via the Guinea-Fowl Trail which runs alongside the Baakens River and passes through a steep-sided valley below the city suburbs for its full length. However, the river is crossed on numerous occasions by steppingstones and these may become hazardous or impassable after rain. The trail is favoured by nature-lovers, cyclists, bird-watchers and of course geocachers. This cache takes you into the Settlers Park Nature Reserve at the Essexvale entrance. To get to the parking area you drive over two bridges which were washed away several times due to flooding. The most recent being in 2006 when residents in Chelmsford Avenue were cut off from the rest of the city. When this happened previously in 1981, residents were isolated for 10 days and declared their independence, even making their own flag.

You will notice on your short walk alongside the river that several of the trees are ring-barked and have died. The coordinates are accurate to within 5m.
