Geocache Description:

Black film canister at the Gaston Boat Access, managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (http://www.ncwildlife.org/). They know that the cache is here. Enter the parking area on the Northampton County side of the bridge--there is a white sign that says "Boat Access".

Some of my favorite caches are the ones with interesting views, and the hide is just there to get you to experience the location. This is one of those caches. Standing at this one point that in some ways mimics a beach, you can see a lot. You can get the feeling that you are underneath the city looking up; you can relax by the water in a bit of seclusion (if the area isn't busy); and you can see one example of why the city across the water is "Roanoke Rapids" (look at the water near the bridge).

You can also see some of the elements that made this city grow...Roanoke Rapids's first cotton mill was built on the site of the paper mill across the river (the paper mill has swallowed it up and taken some of it down). If you look past the bridge on the opposite bank, you can see three tunnels with an abandoned building above it. This is where water was discharged from the old power dam. If you're looking at the paper mill from this spot, the area immediately to your left across the creek is the set of retention ponds for the paper mill. According to KapStone, the EPA requires that they hold water that they have used for 14 days before returning it to the Roanoke River, and they make sure the water coming out is actually cleaner than when it came in.

Enjoy this little piece of peninsular paradise on the Roanoke River!
