How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the listed coordinates. Do not go to the listed coordinates. They will not do you any good.

Before I discovered geocaching, puzzles were already my thing. I do crossword puzzles (always in pen!) and Sudoku (in pen too) but my passion has always been logic problems. Now that I have been geocaching so much over the last few years my logic problem books are really stacking up. (Yes, I’m a nerd and have a subscription) I figured I would try my hand at doing a puzzle cache and maybe hook one or two of you on my favorite type of puzzle. You’ll have to let me know how I did.

Newbie Multicaching

Five newbie geocachers met recently to go tackle their first multicache. They had a great time navigating their way through the area as they swapped geostories and tips. Fun was had by all as each geocaching friend was the first to find a different waypoint. (The 5th waypoint is the final cache location.) The waypoint finder celebrated the find by placing a different swag item in the waypoint container, except for one that had forgotten their swag at home and left nothing. Each waypoint had a different type of cache container and was located in a different type of location (one was a rock pile). The cachers learned quite a bit from each other while working on this geocache. I guess 5 heads (and 10 eyes) are better than 1!

You will need to solve the puzzle to find the location of the geocache.

1.) The finder of the bison tube did not leave a micro geocoin (which wasn’t left by Jon) nor did they leave a travel bug.

2.) Neither the finder of the final cache waypoint nor the one found attached under a picnic table is the one that had a bouncy ball left in it (which wasn’t left at the first waypoint.)

3.) Four of the waypoints are the guard rail cache, the 4th waypoint, the one found by Jon, and one with the bison tube (which didn’t have the compass left in it.)

4.) The waypoint found in a bush is either the first waypoint or the one that the finder left the compass in (or both).

5.) The ammo can (which was found by neither Amber nor Ruby) isn’t the one found in the tree stump (which did have some sort of swag left in the container.)

6.) The container that had a travel bug left in it (which isn’t the ammo can) is neither the guardrail cache nor the 3rd waypoint.

7.) The 2nd waypoint did not have the bison tube nor was it found by Ruby. Ruby did not find the 35mm film container (which wasn’t at the 3rd waypoint.

8.) The fake rock was not at the final cache waypoint.

9.) Jen’s find wasn’t the guard rail cache. Jen did not leave a micro geocoin.

10.) If the 3rd waypoint (which did not have the bison tube) was found in the tree stump, then Jen found her waypoint under the picnic table.

11.) The lock-n-lock container (which was not at the final cache waypoint) was not found by Jon (who didn’t leave a compass in his find.)

12.) Stacia did not find the final cache waypoint (which did have some sort of swag left in it) nor the 35mm film container.

Now use the waypoint numbers you solved in the puzzle to find the coordinates of the cache.

It is located at N 45 AB.CDE W 122 FG.HJK.

A= (Amber * 3) - E

B= (Jen * Ruby) ÷ 10

C= ( Jen * 2) – Amber – Jon – Stacia –
Ruby

D= (Jon * 3) – E - Amber

E= (Stacia * Ruby) - H

F= (Jon * Ruby) -7

G= 126 – ( Jen * Ruby * Jon * Amber * Stacia)

H= (Ruby * Amber) – (F + B)

J = (Jon * 3)

K= F + B - H

I put one of my logic problem books and a few travel bugs to start off the cache. Please use your geomobile to shield yourself from mugglers!
