Located in the A H Reed Memorial Kauri park, this is an easy 5 minute stroll from the lower carpark off Whareora Rd to GZ. Follow Elizabeth track until you reach the crossroads, then continue along the Hatea River walk track GZ is close to this junction. Cache is approximately 7 metres off the track away from the river, camo, head height and in tree. There are several tracks from here, you can continue to the 23.8 m Whangarei Falls along the Hatea River or wander along the Canopy Walkway over the Wai Koromiko stream giving a birds eye view over the forest.The Canopy Walkway is designed to provide access to the disabled and this can be accessed from the middle carpark along Whareora Rd. The Canopy Walkway is wheelchair friendly. To the overseas visitors don’t worry, those small signs along the track indicate eels(tuna) not snakes! .
A.H.Reed was a well known NZ author, publisher and long distance walker, he was a prolific player in protecting and preserving the falls and Kauri forest . He walked the length of New Zealand at the age of 85 and from East Cape to Cape Egmont at 86.
Two years later he walked a total of 1,116 kilometres from Dunedin to Christchurch, across to Westland, down the west coast, and back to Dunedin by way of Haast Pass.
At the sprightly age of 90, Reed walked from Sydney to Melbourne after his nephew joked it would offer great publicity for the publishing firm's newly opened Australian branch. Reed died peacefully in his sleep on 15 January 1975, two months after being knighted by Governor-General Sir Denis Blundell.
