Geocache Description:

Artillery used to be a very important part of all armies in the world for centuries. It also used to be the most important weapon while any siege of a fortress for both - the attacker as well as the defender. Therefore it was an important part of the Olomouc fortress, too.

In the Habsburg Monarchy, regular artillery units were established in the 2nd half of the 17th century when the artillery arsenal was unified in the connection with some findings gained during the wars with the Turks.

O rychlém rozvoji artilerie svedcí i výše jejího stavu.

Artillery always used to be a highly specialised part of the army which was based on guild principles till the half of the 18th century. Members of artillery were mostly recruited from the area of related crafts. They served for the rest of their lives till the year 1812 when the service was limited for “only” 14 years. Artillery service was an exclusive one. The conscript had to be able to read and write in German as well as to fulfil some quite strict physical conditions ; and was not allowed to be a deserter from “the others”.
Another proof of the quick artillery growth also brings the number of its members. In Austria there were 800 artillerymen in the year 1749, but in 1772 the number grew up to 8, 000.

The artillery guns with smooth bronze barrels were not excellent at neither its long shooting range nor its accuracy. In common 800 metres (1, 000 steps), which was the distance for optimal accuracy, the effectiveness of a six-pound cannon is expressed quite illustratively. In those 800 m a cannonball could hit 28 soldiers and even buried itself 2.2 m into the earth.

Každý pluk dále disponoval jednou parkovou a jednou náhradní setninou. Válecný stav baterie cítal 4 dustojníky a 180 mužu. Raketová baterie mela 3 dustojníky a 120 mužu.

In the year 1866 the Austrian army had field artillery which consisted of 12 artillery regiments ladled with numbers 1-12 with 133 batteries. Individual regiments had a name of its honorary owner, same as in the case of ordinary troops. Each artillery regiment was usually divided into 11 batteries - 6 four-pound infantry batteries, 2 four-pound riding batteries, 2 eight-pound infantry batteries and 1 rocket battery. Each regiment also had one park and one spare company. In a war situation, the battery had 4 officers and 180 men. The rocket battery had 3 officers and 120 men.

Raketové baterie byly vybaveny ctyrliberními vystrelovanými a šestiliberními vrhanými raketami, kartáci, zápalnými a osvetlovacími raketami. Jejich dostrel byl do 2000 resp. 1500 kroku a úcinnost kartácu do 300 kroku. Zápalné rakety a ohnové koule mely úcinnost do 1000 kroku.

Rocket batteries were equipped with four-pound shots and six-pound thrown rockets, brushes, flammable rockets and flares. Their firing range was up to 2, 000 or rather 1,500 steps and the effectiveness of the brushes up to 300 steps. Flammable rockets and fire balls had the effectiveness up to 1, 000 steps. However, accuracy of these weapons was very low and therefore they were rarely used in the war.
As there was the motto “hard work in the assault course, easy work in battlefield” even in the era of the emperor Franz Josef, artillerymen had to practise at a shooting range. The cannon shooting range used to be in the suburbs of the Olomouc fortress, at the fort Nr. XV.

N = N1 + A
E = E1 + B

To get the cache you have to find out some information about cannons. Of course, I chose the ones which you can Google easily.

We will be interested in cannons included in the system Gribeauval.
To get the coordinates, you need to find out these indicia:

A. Calibre of a four-pound field canon of the system Gribeauval from the year 1786 in millimetres round to the whole millimetres (It should be a sphere, but you could also use a bore. The difference is minimal and you will find the cache when you get to the place)

B. The year when Gribeauval was promoted to General-Feldwachtmeister (major general) of the Austrian army

Solve an easy equation to get the final:

N = N1 + A
E = E1 + B

VZKAZ PRO BF LOVCE – KEŠ JE UMÍSTENA NEKDE NA PLOŠE BÝVALÉ DELOSTRELECKÉ STRELNICE.
