Geocache Description:

This is a two part multi cache in the old sandstone quarries, which are now incorporated into residential areas of south Lancaster. The coordinates published lead you to a part 1; a small cache containing the coordinates for the regular sized cache (part 2). Please note there is a distance of about 3/4 mile between the two caches and there is some minor climbing and steep areas involved.

“Near Lancaster (upon the common) is an extensive quarry of excellent free-stone, which admits of a fine polish. The county town (Lancaster) is built wholly of this stone, and for its
neatness, is excelled by few towns in the kingdom”
There were up to seven quarries on the Moor in the eighteenth century and another near the Greaves The stone was very pale when fresh and used flush as ashlar.
In the nineteenth century the quarries on Lancaster Moor continued to provide building stone until the 1870s when
they were abandoned and soon incorporated into Williamson Park. A quarry near Primrose Hill, called Scotch Quarry, continued to produce stone into the early twentieth century.

The majority of Lancaster's old quarries are now incorporated into Williamson Park where you can find two other excellent caches. Quarry Conundrum takes you to two lesser know quarries in the area. The first quarry is nameless (as far as I can tell) and is best approached from the top of Park Road, paths also bring you in from Derwent Rd.

Once you have found part one head over to Scotch Quarry, a much larger quarry, now classed as an 'urban park', in the Primrose area. This will take about 4/5 minutes by car or 15 minutes on foot. Head up the main path into Scotch Quarry by the convenience shop at the corner of Dumbarton Road to begin the search for part 2.

Parking for both caches can be found on the residential streets near the entrance to both quarries with short walks to the cache sites from there.
