Bedford, Indiana, has been called the Limestone Capital of the World. The rock in this area is limestone and was deposited from a warm, prehistoric ocean. Conditions during deposition affect the characteristics of the stone. The limestone of this area has unique characteristics that make it very favorable for building stone and for carving. At this site, limestone is being used for another purpose. Other caches in the area that are related to the limestone industry are
GCK8VG - the tomb of the father of the limestone industry in the area
GCE7BA - some outstanding carvings done by master carvers
GCJD3A – a famous limestone quarry
GC1DZBK – another use for limestone
GC1YQV7 - carvings
Limestone is used in buildings and for carvings, but also for cement. Cement is the key ingredient for concrete and limestone is the key ingredient of cement. The abundant deposits of limestone in this area make it a desirable location for a cement plant. The cement industry came to Mitchell in 1902, shortly after Lehigh Cement was founded, and has had a major presence in the following years, including the present. A limestone quarry is located nearby and the limestone is transported to the plant by a conveyor belt. The limestone, along with marl, shale, iron and clay, is heated to about 3000 degrees in a kiln. The result, called clinker, is then pulverized to form cement powder.
