The cache is hidden along Shichijo-dori Street, and under the elevated railroad of JR San’in Main Line. This place was called “Tambaguchi” and was the beginning point of old San’in Kaido Road which was also known as Tamba Kaido Road.
San’in Kaido is an old highway which stars in Kyoto and went to the side of Japan Sea via old Tamba province. Its origin is thought to be an ancient national road. In early modern period, the part of the road in Kyoto city was connected to Shichijo-dori street, and went on almost same line of the present street.
After 1591, there was a wall around the city area of Kyoto developed by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, which was on the place of present elevated railway at this place, and there was a “Tambaguchi gate” as an entrance on the wall. This “gate” was one of major entrances of Kyoto city which were often called “The Seven Gates” or “The Ten Gates”.
The name of the entrance remains in the station of JR San’in Main Line which is on about a half kilometers north from the place.
