Just across the river from Ashhurst via the Saddle Road you can access the river via a (very steep) gravel road. There is room for one or two cars to park safely off the road before going down the road - I recommend taking your car down ONLY if you have a good 4-wheel drive!
The Pohangina river joins the Manawatu river just south of here, and so this section of river is much smaller than the Manawatu down towards Palmerston North - even so, it has a very wide river bed (with many stones to be thrown into the water) and its volume varies considerably with rainfall.
The cache is not at river level, and has various ways you could get to GZ. There is no track to get to it, although depending on how you approach there may be no climbing involved.
