Tabulam Timber Truss Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

MattyRx: The bridgework continues and the reasons that this cache were listed are gone. Best I archive it to open up the area to potential new hides once the new bridge has been completed.

Geocache Description:

Tabulam Timber Truss

This cache is located close to the Tabulam Bridge - which spans across the Clarence River on the Bruxner Highway about 50km West of Casino/70km East of Tenterfield. It's the longest single span wooden bridge in the Southern Hemisphere, with a length of nearly 300m. The bridge was completed in 1903 and was the first bridge to cross the Clarence. It's been an important river crossing point ever since. The total cost of the project was £15,884.

The cache is also located very close to where Harry Lasseter lived. He was most famed for the 'Lasseter's Lost Reef' mystery - he reportedly discovered a massive goldfield in central Australia, but it couldn't be found on a return trip when the surveyors accompanied him. Some are still looking for it. He also raised the Tabulam post office 15cm - such a multi-talented bloke! He was a Tabulam resident between 1910 and 1915 and lived here with his wife and daughters. There is an information plaque mounted on a stone close to the cache.

Please note that deck replacements are commencing from April 18th 2011, and the bridge will be closed to all traffic from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm - MON, TUES, WED & THUR (Excluding public holidays). Signs at Tenterfield and Casino will advise. Bridgeworks is expected to take up to 6 months.

Bridge is now opened, though work is continuing.

You'll be looking for a regular sized Lock and Lock container - there's a few swaps in there as well. Please recover the cache well, as it has been seen and muggled before.
