A replacement cache for the original 'iCache on the iThan'; now a bigger cache for you to find on the banks of the River Ythan (pronounced i-th-an).
The origin of the river's name is unclear but it may be derived from the gaelic word ‘Athan’ meaning ‘ford’. Reference to a river called ‘Ituna’ is made in some old reports from Roman times although other sources suggest that it originated from an old Pictish word of Brythonic origin meaning gorse.
The river Ythan is approximately 39 miles long. It’s source can be found in the vicinity of Ythan Wells near Auchterless from where it runs through Fyvie and Methlick and Ellon to reach the sea here at Newburgh.
In 1979 the Ythan Estuary was incorporated into the Forvie Nature Reserve which provides habitats for a large numbers of birds (225 species) including ducks, waders, sea birds and geese.
A larger car park is available on the east side of the bridge for the Forvie Nature reserve which provides some lovely walking and an opportunity to appreciate the diverse range of estuary wildlife.
