Dowhill Castle or Doohill castle as we children knew it.
Cache is a lock and lock container.
This is one of seven Tower-houses or Keeps in Kinross-shire, the others being Lochleven, Arnot, Burleigh, Cleish, Aldie and Tullibole.
Each castle is said to be within sight of at least one other so that beacon warnings of approaching enemies could be passed quickly round the county.
The Tower-house built c. 1500 and subsequently extended Westwards. All of ashlar.
Tower is square and was probably 4 storeyed. Now reduced to 2 storeys, (lower one vaulted).
Wing reduced to vaulted 1st storey with round tower at S.W. corner. Barmkin on N. with round tower (containing doocot) at N.E. angle.
Once the former strongold of Lindsays of Dowhill (descended from Sir William Lindsay, half-brother of 1st Earl of Crawford) William Adam acquired Dowhill 1740 and left it to his son Robert 1748.
As children we would walk over the ancient right of way through Blairadam estate to Dowhill from Maryburgh to play in the castle.
The people of Maryburgh and Keltybridge would walk this way to church in Cleish each Sunday.
