Limestone island is a Scenic Reserve, it is an open sanctuary for public recreation and the protection of flora and fauna. Since 1989 efforts have been made to restore the coastal native forest. Volunteers plant 5,000 to 10,000 trees on the island every winter. The Whangarei community planted a massive 23,000 trees and shrubs in the year 2000 to celebrate the millennium .The production of lime in the 1850’s saw business develop around the production of cement, in 1906 the island was purchased by NZ Portland Cement and quickly became a major industry for the area employing 270 people at it’s peak. A village was established with a dance hall, store, school, cottages and about 100 people resided on the Island. Now as you walk around the island you can see the remains of furnaces , kilns, concrete buildings, quarries and rusty machinery. Matakohe-Limestone Island, which has no predators, offers a safe place for Kiwi chicks (microchipped) to grow to a size where they can be relocated back to the mainland. Matakohe-Limestone Island over seven years has successfully returned 61 kiwi back into the mainland environment, helping kiwi survive in the wild.
The cache is located in the area where the old Loading Gantry once operated GZ is an area scattered with old rusted machinery from days gone by. You are looking for a very large rusted machine on its side. Cache is log only and your own writing instrument is required, look at ground level.
