Geocache Description:

The coordinates are for a starting point at a free unlimited car park at a supermarket. This cache will take you around parts of Millom and scenery tourists will enjoy. It will take about one hour to take in the walk and the last part will be just a little bit rough. The puzzle will lead you around what has made Millom a happy place to live and to visit.

Millom is mentioned in the Doomsday Book as one of the twenty-six townships forming the Manor of Hougun held by Earl Tostig and Millom was once the most southerly town in the historic county of Cumberland. Millom built its name around the 1850’s with the discovery of iron ore. A mine was sunk at nearby Steel Green and an iron foundry was built which gave employment to most of the town. By the late 1960’s, the cost of recovering the iron ore had increased to an extent it was not economical to mine it anymore and the mine and iron works closed. The mine area is now a caravan park and wildlife area and the iron works and old slag bank now a new wildlife reserve. To commemorate the iron industry in this area, a monument has been erected in the main square. Also in the town by the railway station, is a local heritage museum depicting all that has made Millom, it is well worth the visit. Millom is also the birthplace of famous poet Norman Nicholson. You can always enjoy a cuppa and a bite to eat at the Nicholson House Café.The cache is a small lockable box with a few swaps and log book and pencil.

The coordinates for the final cache are N 54° 12.ABC and W 003° 15.DEF
