This cache is hidden at the Pipestem Falls just off of Route 20 between Athens and Hinton.Pipestem Falls is a 30+ foot drop on Pipestem Creek. The creek and falls are named for the Pipestem Plant, aka Spiraea alba, a hollowed stem shrub that was used for making pipestems. The shrub still grows abundantly along the creek. The creek flows down to the Bluestone River, just west of its confluence with the New River.
YOU DONT HAVE TO CLIMB DOWN A ROCK OUTCROPPING TO GET TO THE CACHE. YOU CAN WALK AROUND THE OUTCROPPING TO THE CACHE.
The accuracy of both GPS's that we used was 32ft. When you walk up to the viewing area you will be about 100ft from the cache but then there is the reason this is a 4 terrain. Even though you are only 100 ft from it you have to hike to it. The easiest way to the cache is to go up river and find a place with enough rocks in the river to allow you to cross without getting your feet wet. Then follow the gps to the cache.
The cache is a clear lock n lock container with various tradables. Please be careful around the water and watch your steps for the rock outcroppings. This cache is available year round, it was hidden in the winter. It will probably take at least 30-40 minutes to retrieve this cache so don't l;et the proximity to the road fool you. Good Luck and Happy Caching!!!
