This was the site of Pildacre Colliery, flooded November 6th 1910 by water entering the underground workings at a rate estimated at 30-50 thousand gallons an hour. Ossetts growing population quickly saw the disaster as a silver lining and in 1922 the Pildacre water works began supplying water pumped from the mine via the tower at Gawthorpe. The old water works were demolished about 20 years ago. I remember water in the 60’s causing lime scale on kettles etc, caused I was told by lime being added to make the water potable. It was used as the main water supply until 1974.
Now the area is a public recreation area, used by dog walkers, kite fliers and ball players alike with some good views over the Calder valley and beyond. There is parking within 50m of the cache and you can do a circular walk to “Four Poster” by following the old railway alongside to Runtlings and then footpaths down to Healy New Mills, various other paths then take you back to Pildacre.
No room for anything other than the log and a pencil. It’s a little exposed but pick your time and you should be ok.
