Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache located on the now defunct South Gippsland Railway Line. The retaining wall from the station's platform is now in fairly poor condition and the platform itself is just as bad. Beware walking in the long grass around this old station during summer as we were told by locals that the place is infested with tiger and brown snakes. For this reason alone we decided not to put the cache in here.

Kernot was a railway station on the Wonthaggi line located on the Bass Coast, Victoria. The station operated until the closure of the Wonthaggi line in the late 1970s. The station was located within walking distance of the Kernot General Store.

The picture below shows the Kernot station site some time pre 2005 and it was reasonably accessible. (Picture courtesy of Ross Thompson’s web page www.vicrailstations.com)

This picture (below) was taken in 2009.

The following two pictures show Kernot station site as it is now in January 2011.

There appears to be very little info on the history of this area (except for the book, Three stops on the line: a history of Kernot, Almurta and Woodleigh by Jan Harper) which is a little expensive to buy just for a couple of caches. If anyone has a copy we would love to borrow it so we could read it and change this page some more.

Also close by is the Kernot Food and Wine Store which we can recommend. Below is a picture of how it used to look some years ago. Note the railway lines in the road.

And here is a picture taken in 2011.

Whilst you are looking for the cache you may want to visit Fairy Dell which is close by. Here we were hoping to find a GCA gnome but it would appear that they have not ventured down this way so far. Please take care not to destroy this area as these gnomes are fragile.

The area where the cache is hidden is visible to the road, so you will still have to keep your wits about you.

Please rehide the cache carefully complete with camo so to keep it safe from passing eyes. The location could be a bit of a stretch for some, but at least it should not get flooded this time.

++++ Congratulations to Gonefishen07 for the FTF ++++
