For over 100 years the commercial fishing industry flourished on the Columbia River. I grew up in that industry right here at 'Lower Corbett'. Imagine 15 to 20 floating docks (floats) tied to the piling, the remnants of some still remain. 20 or 30 'Gillnet' boats always ready to set their nets up and down this stretch of the river, moored to the floats.
This cache is in memory of those men who brought salmon, sturgeon, shad and a variety of other fishes up from these waters to be enjoyed at the table of thousands throughout the world.
Specifically, this cache is to honor my father, Alfred E. (Bud) Mershon proud owner of the "Three Boys and later the "Pisces", in honor of my little sister.
Dad spent his life fishing these waters of the Columbia River for over 50 years. The long tedious hours of night through which he waited for the 'right time' for the catch to be brought in were spent in the presence of God. Dad was a faithful man, a gentle and patient man .... an honorable man and he practiced mercy. Alfred E. Mershon my Father and my Friend.
