Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache at Almurta is located on the now defunct South Gippsland Railway Line. The railway crossing was located within 20 metres of the cache site and the old platform mound is out of site behind all the hedges over the road. Although the line area is Crown land and you can venture down there by foot we were told by locals that the place is infested with tiger and brown snakes.

Almurta is a small town in Victoria, Australia. It is located along Glen Alvie Road, in the Bass Coast Shire, 107 kilometres south east of Melbourne.

A full Post Office opened here on April 21, 1914 but was closed in 1969.

The name “Almurta” was taken from an Aboriginal word meaning either mistletoe or sweet, good.

Almurta railway station open in the 1920’s and operated until the closure of the Wonthaggi line in the late 1970s. The retaining wall from the stations platform is in poor condition however a nearby trestle bridge is still intact. See below.





The railway trucking yards at Almurta Station were used extensively by the local graziers of the area to transport their cattle and sheep to the Newmarket Sales Yards for sale. The rail system was also used for transporting replacement stock bought from the sales, back to the trucking yards from where the local farmers moved the cattle to their properties on foot.

The Almurta Station was used as the Post Office and mail centre until the Post office on the Glen Forbes road opened.

The last passenger service ran in December 1977 and the line closed altogether a year later.

This cache is an easy find, just be careful you don't get spotted as the road past here can get pretty busy just when you don't want it to. Also please make sure you keep any geokids on a short rein around the cache GZ.
