Geocache Description:

My first cache here, Disappointment, GCXM7A, was located much closer to the water's edge. .

It was named because of my disappointment at not getting to go to the WSGA Campout at Lake Chelan in August, 2006. I was packed up, loaded, and 50 miles down the road, when a horrible screeching noise intermittently sounded from under the hood of my Pickup. I pulled off at the upcoming rest area, but couldn't get the sound to replicate itself, so pulled out onto the highway, went about 500 feet, and as I crossed the Columbia River on the Vernita Bridge, it began again. So I made the nearest U-Turn possible and sadly drove back toward home. To cheer myself up, and make the evening not be a total waste, I decided to explore some areas along the Yakima River for possible cache locations. Many were fishing areas I had not visited in over 20 years, (back when I used to go fishing----before discovering geocaching.) This location happens to be one of them. My how the area has changed!!! There is a very nice Benton County Campground nearby, and an actual boat ramp, not just a muddy slope.

According to History records, this area was the site of Columbia Camp, a Federal Prison Camp from 1944 to Oct 1947. For more information go to this link: http://allgallery.tripod.com/0000s/ColumbiaCamp.html
For more history of the Hanford area and the Manhattan Project, go to this link: http://www.childrenofthemanhattanproject.org/HA/Photo-Pages/HAP-339.htm
The title photo came from The Children of the Manhattan Project website.

After logging your find, check out the informational Kiosk along the walking trail between here and the campground, for more information about the history of this area. The Kiosk also mentions First Federal Road in the Northwest-1853, which also happens to be another of my caches (GCXM7A), located in Columbia Park along the Columbia River. First Federal Road in the Northwest-1853 GCXM7A

I didn't know about this info center when I placed either cache, but found it while searching for the now archived cache, On the Wing (GCY092) by lionpup.

This location has been a popular one for caches. Check out the long archived Only Twelve Escapes cache, GCCE7A, placed in 2003. https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCCE7A_only-twelve-escapes
