Lochiel School 2 Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The Lochiel School version 2 was relocated to this school reserve, stone by stone. This new school opened in 1930, after a delegation recieved 200 pounds from the Minister of Education. In 1934 a house became available for the schools teacher, after a local store merchant had three houses built, one for his shop assistant, one for speculation and one for the school teacher. The Education Department purchased the residence in 1952. It was not until April 3, 1945, that a bus service commenced with a Essex 'Super 6' car(1928 model ) bringing students from Bumbunga.Later, the car was replaced by a ex-Army ambulance which, after being used for 12 months, was converted into a bus. This bus served the area until the Education Department took over the bus service. In the 1950's, the school attendance rose to 62, thus necessitating the erection of an extra class room in 1957, and the appointment of an assistant teacher. The numbers of students slowly declined as farms grew larger and the Salt Works modernised, eventually the school closed on the 18th December 1987 and the students were enrolled in Snowtown Area School. The site is now a play area with the old school building, next door, now a private residence. Please try to return to hiding place without damaging the site, just a little tension should do it.
