Geocache Description:

You are looking for a tub which should house most trackables.

******* Please if you take a trackable replace it with one! ********

It is the ethos of all Geocaching.

This cache is accessable 24/7.

Camden Town has existed only since the 1790s. Until then, the area north of Tottenham Court was given over to open land and fields. This green expanse was crossed by the (now vanished) Fleet river.

Camden Square is located between Camden Town and Kentish Town. It has three roads surrounding to the north, south and west called Camden Square and Murray Street. To the east is a strip of land owned by the adjacent church.

Set in the centre of Edwardian terraced houses, Camden Square is an informal garden square. It has a long history of being an open space.

1830-40 The gardens were probably laid out

Mid 1840s The villas at the north of the square were built

1849 The original St Paul’s Church (at the top of the square) was consecrated

1849 The Cantelowes Archers (founded in 1849) used part of the park for their Camden Square Archery

1850s The remainder of houses were built

1868 Problem with ‘rowdy youths’ climbing over the railings and their ‘vulgar language and rude demeanour’

1940s The square’s iron railings were removed as part off the national patriotic gesture (supposedly to be melted down for arms manufacture during WWII) and trench shelters were dug.

1940-43 12-26 Camden Square suffered bomb damage in WWII, their sites and gardens were used to build the Council housing blocks backing onto Abingdon Close.

1950s A council adventure playground stood where the Play Centre now operates. The playground was closed in 1976 as it was deemed too dangerous.

1951 Garden committee records (1868-1950s) were donated to the Council by a Mrs McConkey and are now held in Camden’s Local Archive centre, Holborn Library.

1952-5 Annie Swan lived at 52 Camden Square, the house was known as Henry Carter House

1972 Henry Carter House becomes part of the London Irish Centre, which two priests founded as a hostel for young people from Ireland.

2006 Planting improvements undertaken throughout the gardens

I first visited in 1981 and know this area because of the Irish Centre, a great place to socialise and the venue for many a great party.

Nearby is a 'Brown Plaque' to Krishna Menon a Malayalee activist and a passionate proponent of India's freedom.

There is also a great play area for kids nearby.

As of 27th July 2011 this Cache has become famous for Being opposite Amy Winehouse last known resting place!!
